The U.S. Navy has identified a sailor who died as a result of a head-on vehicle collision at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia on Saturday.

Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Oscar Jesus Temores, 23, was killed after a car crashed into his patrol vehicle at the base gate, the service said in a news release.

The incident occurred when an unidentified male driving a Chevy pickup truck entered the base "through the outbound late of Gate 8 at a high rate of speed," officials said. "The suspect was on base for a short period before he collided head on with a Navy patrol car driven by Temores."

Both drivers were transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment. Temores died shortly after.

A native of California, Temores enlisted on Feb. 12, 2018, according to the service. He joined the base's security department that June.

Base officials held a candlelight vigil over the weekend for Temores, who leaves behind a wife and two-year-old son.

"This was an opportunity for our security team to come together and to honor a close member of our team," said Lt. Ryan Nolan, a security officer at Fort Story.

"It was especially important to us to have Petty Officer Temores' family with us as we grieve and reconcile the loss of such an outstanding young man, one who had so much potential and commitment to our country," Nolan said in the release.

Friends and family have created a GoFundMe page for donations to help support Temores' wife and son.

"His loss is a tremendous blow to our family, and to the community of Lemoore, [California], where he was born and raised," the GoFundMe post states. "He made an impact on every face he interacted with through his ability to make anyone laugh or smile."
